About This Vineyard
The Urbajs family is representative of a new generation of winegrowers who grow their grapes and produce their wine organically. Chemical pesticides and herbicides are rejected, grass is allowed to grow freely between the vines, the yield is kept low at only 0.7 – 1 kilogram (1.54 – 2.2 lb.) per grapevine. This requires hard work, so they cultivate only 0.7 hectare (1.7 acre) on the very steep sites of Dramlje and Rifnik. Only white grapes are grown: Chardonnay, Kerner, Sivi Pinot, and Laski Rizling.
All Urbajs wines are made from overripe grapes infected with Botrytis cinerea). In the last five years, the Urbajs family have successfully prepared seven late harvest wines and one suhi jagodni izbor wine. All Urbajs wines are fermented and matured in aged oak barrels. The Urbajs winery only began attending wine exhibitions in 1990, but they have already won thirteen medals for their wines. Their best vintage were 1991 and 1993.
