About This Vineyard
Situated southeast of Chablis and Auxerre (whose Kimmeridgian and Portlandien chalk it shares), Vezelay was once the center of a thriving wine culture, and a stalwart band of growers (including notable pioneer Bernard Raveneau who directs the local coop) are out to make that so again. Jean Montanet’s Domaine de la Cadette organic whites have a mysterious meatiness and minerality, the balance of richness and cut that accrue to some very fine Chablis costing 2-3 times the price. Constant watchfulness in his vines and cellar is making for ever-better fruit and more sophisticated winemaking.
